Arthrodesis

Living with constant joint pain due to severe arthritis, injury, or deformity can limit your life in many ways. Arthrodesis, also known as joint fusion surgery, is a proven orthopedic solution that helps relieve pain and restore strength when other treatments have failed.

What is Arthrodesis?

Arthrodesis is a surgical procedure that permanently joins two bones, eliminating the joint between them. By fusing the bones together, the joint becomes stable and pain-free, though it no longer moves. This technique is commonly used for spine, ankle, wrist, and finger joints that are severely damaged.

During the surgery, the damaged cartilage is removed, and the bones are held in place using plates, screws, or rods. Over time, the bones grow together and form a single solid unit.

When is Arthrodesis Recommended?

✅ Advanced osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
✅ Severe joint instability or deformity
✅ Failed joint replacement
✅ Joint infections that can’t be controlled
✅ Chronic pain that doesn’t improve with medications or physical therapy

What to Expect:
  • Reduced or no joint pain

  • Increased strength and support in the joint area

  • Gradual recovery with help of physiotherapy

  • Limited joint movement, but better overall function
